HOUSTON — The Houston Astros are facing a challenging situation regarding the availability of third baseman Alex Bregman as he navigates ongoing issues with his right elbow. Bregman, who returned to the lineup after a five-game absence, indicated that his capacity to play third base will be a “fluid situation” moving forward in the season.
During his return on Wednesday, Bregman was designated as the team’s hitter, where he hit a solo home run in his first at-bat. However, he did not secure any hits in his following three attempts. After the game, Bregman discussed the need for careful management of the swelling in his elbow, which he noted is not related to any structural damage to his ulnar collateral ligament.
Despite these claims, he is struggling with lingering swelling, which he referred to as “little gremlins” that he must manage for the rest of the season. Bregman underwent arthroscopic surgery after the 2018 season to remove bone chips from the same elbow, although he did not confirm any direct correlation with his current condition. He reported that he felt no pain or discomfort during throwing exercises leading up to Wednesday’s game.
