The birth of a child is one of the most exciting times in the lives of Texas parents. Parents face the birth of a child with great anticipation and excitement. Most births go as expected, but, occasionally, a birth injury can occur. One such procedure that can result in an unexpected injury is a caesarian section, otherwise known as a C-section.
For many new parents, a caesarian section is a procedure that is not planned. In many cases, a caesarian section is performed in an emergency situation. Reasons for a caesarian section include the mom’s labor not progressing, the baby not receiving enough oxygen, the baby is in a breach position, the mom is carrying multiple babies, the mom had a previous C-section, the baby has health concerns or there is a problem with the umbilical cord, among other situations.
Sometimes, these procedures do not go as planned. A delayed caesarian section can lead to many complications for the newborn, including a serious injury. When a doctor does not recognize the signs of fetal distress and does not perform a C-section in a timely manner there can be many unexpected complications. An emergency C-section is usually performed in 30 minutes or less. When this does not happen a baby can be born with cerebral palsy, developmental delays and seizure disorders, among many other complications. Some of these complications can have a life-long effect on the baby and require long-term care.
Parents who believe their newborn suffered from a delayed caesarian section may wish to speak with a legal professional, who is skilled in birth injuries. They can help a family determine what happened to cause the injury and hold the medical provider accountable for the injury.
